What is a Battea?
"Battea” is derived from a Spanish word, "batea", which refers to a shallow sided wooden bowl used to pan for gold by early prospectors and explorers during expeditions to the New World. The panning process was laborious and required skill, experience, focus and patience. After filling the bowl with soil and then sifting and washing it over and over with creek or river water, eventually only the heaviest element - gold – remained.
